[oclug] no console on Linux v2.6.0-test1

I have been trying to test Linux v2.6.0-test1. I configured and
compiled a fairly boring kernel with few changes to the default
options[1]. The kernel does boot but nothing is displayed to the
console after the message "OK booting kernel". I know the kernel boots
as there is disk actvity, and v2.6 kernel logs in /var/log/kern.log. I
cannot find the option for a VGA console in 'make menuconfig'. When I
tried to manually add CONFIG_VGACON the option was removed by 'make
oldconfig'. I tried the framebuffer (VGA16 and VESA) as well with no
luck. I am useing a Matrox Parhelia card which does not have direct FB
support.

Any pointers?
