A friend of mine was working in a company on a C compiler for the US
military.  When I questioned him about it, he said something like this:

    The military is going to have a compiler, whether I work on it or not.
    Given that this is true, and that large and dangerous things are
    going to be controlled by code from this compiler, I want to be one
    of the people making sure that they get a damn accurate compiler!
