I was to original poster and I'm running Gentoo 1.4rc3

At present I don't use xdm, gdm, kdm etc, just startx.

The reason for my orginal post was... I use Midnight Commander a lot and
I wanted to be able to open files directly, but without having to use a
fix link. Since Openoffice in Gentoo always creates a directory in /opt
that looks like "OpenOffice.org(the version number)" i.e.
OpenOffice.org1.0.3. I wanted a why to do the PATH that I could replace
the version number with a Wild Card and thus not have to create new PATH
every time a new version came out.

I hope that help clarify things.
