Thanks Val. That is interesting. However, instead of trying to adapt a
canned product (ddclient) I'll take the route of masochism and
home-grown solution for now. 

The possibility of being able to probe my router for its address is
exciting and I think worth following up - could be a lot simpler and
potentially more reliable than the e-mail approach.
