Bingo. Doing that "service" thing on both machines revealed that telnet
was not available on caviar. Running rpm -qa|grep telnet showed me that
telnet-server was not installed, so I hauled out the installation CD-ROM
and rectified that. Then I was able to start the telnet service.
Many thanks for your succinct instructions. Acid test: allowed me to do
something totally insane from flamen: telnet to caviar and start a Win95
virtual machine under vmware!
