[oclug]Couldn't open /proc/mounts/ No such file or directory

I'm afraid I need more info than this. Just upgrading the sytem from
the boot CD does not work since it does not recognise the need for an
upgrade.
Booting in a rescue mode allowed me to narrow down the problem.
/proc seems to be all righ, but /etc lost most of its contents, including
(probably, most importantly) fstab.
How can I restore my /etc?
Thanks, Olga.
