Are you using lilo?
I think grub is newer than lilo.

Do a google search for "lilo and WinXP" or "grub and WinXP".
Maybe someone here has
"GRUB can chain to WinXP's boot code when WinXP is in a primary 
partition, but not when it's in a logical partition.".
