[oclug] OT: League of Nations

I guess I am a bit more concerned with history repeating itself. It was the
league of nations that wanted to lift the sanctions against Germany,
sanctions that were strangling the country. The US refused to support the
league and lobbied for its demise. Was it not the LN's collapse and the
failure to lift those sanctions and the subsequent massive inflation and
starvation through out Germany that propelled the Nazi's to total power and
that (can arguably be said to have) led to the second world war?
Does this not seem very very de ja vu?

There is a very long history here that I can only summarize briefly. It will
however do an injustice to the root causes by generalizing to the point that
this forum requires.
1. The US is currently the largest contributor to the funds needed to
operate
the UN facilities in New York. They were going to pull the plug last year
already and the place would have shut down literally.
2. For all the good the UN does its also a money pit for foreign dignataries
who spend spend spend while in New York, and guess who picks up the tab.??
3. There is considerable pressure put on the US by key players in forum to
essentially make them a non entity at the UN...
4. There is lots more that can be said, buts its better to readup on it from
whatever critical sources you rely on.
5. Lets just say that IMHO and from what I have seen, the UN aint all that
its
image is cracked up to be. GW is shooting from the hip to get some of that
frustration out, not that I trust him at this point. Just presenting one
view
of where he may be comming from.
