[oclug] Hard Drive Problem

When I ran tripwire this morning, the computer locked up - no hard
drive activity, keyboard unresponsive, so I had to crash the computer
to continue using it.  It booted OK, so I ran tripwire and it locked
again.  Another crash and another boot.

I tried fdisk and I get the message "the number of cylinders for this
disk is set to 8959" ...

Can I recover the system?  Any help would be appreciated.
