Really?  I use UW IMAP on some rather underpowered hardware (A P-75
with 16MB of memory, to be exact -- my corporate mail server :-)) and
it seems nice and fast.  Of course, I run it over my LAN.  I suspect
it's network issues that are causing the slowdown rather than the IMAP
server.

You need clients which cache header info locally.  Also, if you need to
read your mail locally, it's probably faster to ssh into the box and use
PINE to read IMAP on 127.0.0.1, rather than tunneling IMAP itself over SSH.
