I've found that if you trade kwin in for other window mangers (like
openbox, plug!) a lot of the speed problems aren't as pronounced on my
system. Now, if only we could get KDE to realize that some people
might not want to use kwin, and remove the configuration panel from
the control center when it isn't running.
