[oclug]Weird routing problem

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

I upgraded the drive in the main family computer last week. I
copied over the old version of Windows98 from the earlier
drive, and it continues to access the Internet fine across the
LAN through the router.

However, I also decided to reinstall Mandrake Linux 9.0
(which had been working fine before). Now, using the
_same_ static IP address and other settings as Windows (and
as I have always used for this PC), I can't get past the router.
In other words, the Windows partition can see the LAN and the
Internet, but the Linux partition, with the same settings as
Windows and as it had before, can now only see the LAN.

The router (Freesco) has always worked flawlessly, so I don't
think it is an issue there. I can ping from the affected machine
anywhere within the LAN (but not out), and I can load pages
from web servers anywhere on the LAN (but not outside).
VNC, etc, everything seems to work. So it's just a problem
with the routing, right?

Except I have even tried manually setting the routing table,
without success. ie route add default gw 192.168.x.xx.
I can merrily delete and add the default route all I like - it still
doesn't go.

I have never run into anything comparable to this before. I
suspect that the routing tables were corrupted during the
install somehow, but what is the file where this information is
stored? Any other thoughts?

Hugh
