[oclug]setting up xfree-gnome

I was wondering if anyone could help.

I just installed gentoo Linux on my main box, did an emerge xfree86
then an emerge gnome. All the programs did compile properly.
I ran xf86config to get basic config file (SIS5598 vid card, serial mouse 
and AT keyboard).

my problem is that when I run startx to load Gnome I get the Gnome splash 
screen and then the keyboard locksup, the mouse will still track.

then I tried running gdm and it came up fine can use both the mouse and 
keyboard to log-in, but the keyboard still locks when starting ANY window 
manager. I have tried tweeking the config file by hand and still the same 
results.

I know that it is probably something simple that I am overlooing.
