[oclug]VIM pasting oddities

I'm sure this has been irritating others.  When I paste into vim, I get
all manner of fsckups happening to my pasted text.  If I have an indented
line, each successive line is additionally indented (ie: one indent will
give two indents on the next line, three on the next and so on).
Sometimes, the # at the start of a shebang line or a comment will be
replicated on each successive line as well.  Very annoying.  The old vi
didn't seem to do this (I'm glad I kept it installed).  Is there an
incantation to fix this?
