There should indeed be such an animal :)  Compress/uncompress is the
origial unix compression program.  The compression sux relative to gzip or
bzip2 but it has the advantage of (supposedly) being supported by any unix
system still running.

Although "compress" uses a seperate (older) compression algorithm it
looks like a modern gunzip can uncompress a .Z file (the extension for a
compressed file).

Try gunzip & see how it goes.  Alternatively you'll be able to find an
uncompress binary somewhere in your distribution (ie, in a package
somewhere :)
