   Yes, I'm aware of the transfer rates of both mediums. I should have 
been more specific.  I'm not even talking about file access. A directory 
listing on a dir with one file takes > 20 seconds on average. A portion 
of the latency is due to the underlying FreeSwan VPN, but it is still 
extremely slow when I bypass the VPN. I know SMB can be quite chatty, 
but this seems unreasonable.

  In the past I have used Netware over 128kbit links with much faster 
performance, so me thinks there must be something that I can do to 
improve things.
