You might be interested in the Open Book Project series called
"How to think like a computer scientist" by Allen Downey.  http://www.ibiblio.org/obp/thinkCS.php  You get to choose a language, and
the author takes you through a lot of the getting started hoops.

I've paid a hundred dollars for books that wern't as well written as these.
