Good day to everyone

I have never posted to this list before however I have been subscribed for awhile. My reasoning for this initial post is to ask for some guidance. I have been trying to learn how to function in linux for a number of months now. I have RH7.1 installed on one of my systems, and my initial intention was to get ipmasquerading working, and set up the system in question as a NAT server/DHCP server/firewall for my internal network.

I have to say, I really like the concept of open-source, and linux. I have this romanticized image in my head of being able to navigate around throught the system, and understand what most of the config files do, and how to edit them. To manipulate my server, and fine tune it to do what I want. This capacity for manipulation is one of linuxs' strong drawing points for me.

I have been reading 'how-to' after 'how-to' with varying levels of success. I get a few pages into one 'how-to' and they reference three other 'how-to's to read, ( which also reference others ) I have been running into problem after problem. I don't know anyone personally who has any experience with linux, to ask for help.

I have reached what I fear may be my wits end. I would love to learn Linux, but I am spinning my wheels. I need help.

I am willing to pay someone if I have to, who knows what they are doing to come over and help me, and explain what the hell I am doing wrong.

I am not a complete moron regarding networking, or computers. I have taken Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering in College. I work as a programmer during the day, computers are a major hobby of mine, but I need some assistance here.

Please, if anyone can offer any guidance I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Todd Clattenburg
