What PC builders around town do people commend as decent chaps these
days?

I've got a "parental unit" who needs a new computer, and it would be
nice to be able to direct him to some options other than
{HP|Dell|IBM}, where while there may be pretty boxes, sometimes you're
buying what they're selling this week, as opposed to what's _good_...

The last machine he got (sucked into?) was a P3 box that ought to have
had more horsepower than any hardware I have, but was originally
equipped with 64MB of RAM (quite unbelievable, for the CPU), and has
been sucking wind BADLY for some time now.  

He bought that from a "clone vendor," so evidently there are some bad
ones to steer clear of :-(.

The thought is a "generic desktop; big screen for
post-cataract-surgery eyes."  Ask no questions about OS plans and I'll
tell you no lies :-).
