I'll try that as soon as I decide I have to reboot.

I noticed something funny when I did that. I gave the hdparm command to
disable dma, then to make sure it was off I checked to see what hdparm
could tell me about the drive. This is what I got:

/dev/cdrom:
 HDIO_GET_MULTCOUNT failed: Invalid argument
 I/O support  =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  0 (off)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 HDIO_GET_NOWERR failed: Invalid argument
 readonly     =  1 (on)
 readahead    =  8 (on)
 HDIO_GETGEO failed: Invalid argument
 busstate     =  1 (on)

It's the "Invalid argument" that concerns me. My CD-RW is on the same
IDE interface, and it doesn't seem to have any problems functioning.

As another test, I tried to play an audio cd in the drive and control it
using the buttons on the front of the cdrom drive. Music doesn't play.

Maybe the drive is cooked. I have noticed that after extended use, cd's
come out pretty warm out of that drive.

Thanks all for your help,
TC.
