    I'm not, but I didn't think they were required to use a ppp connection.
The ip-up script is run when the connection comes up, ip-down when it goes
down, so you can do housekeeping. You should still be able to establish a
connection without them. 
    Does Gentoo not provide a ppp package with these anyway?
