Lithium Ion and Nickel Metal Hydride batteries do have a "memory" effect, however, it is not as severe an effect with Nickel Cadmium batteries.
My cellphone manual suggests completely discharging the battery, and then letting it charge for 24hrs about once a month to extend the life of the battery.
This applies for both L-ion and Ni-mh batteries.
