Actually, this is incorrect. There are 3 branches of Debian: stable,
testing and unstable. If you want really bleeding edge, you point apt to
the unstable branch (which has X 4.0.x, KDE 2.1, etc).

There are also some other sources which provide packages such as KDE 2.1
and X 4.0 for the current stable release. This is for those that want to 
run updated packages without having to worry about the problems that 
come with running unstable.

Take a look at http://packages.debian.org and search for these packages
in "unstable" and "testing" and you'll find that those packages are
fairly up-to-date.
