I agree whole heartedly! When I made the *total* switch over, I
noticed that I didn't really miss many of the M$ exclusive apps. In
fact, the odd time that I have to quickly use a windows machine, I
find it a difficult switch.  Things that I take for granted in *nix
like pasting (highlight -> middle button) aren't there in
windows. There are many others that I can't think of though. In fact,
I have chosen to not even use non-Free software on linux (ie
Realplayer) and find that I don't miss it. (I don't mean to include
that to sound preachy, just trying to make a point).

BTW, instant messaging is well supported in Linux. My sister has
started using Linux and wanted to talk to her MSN buddies. Everybuddy,
among many others, worked just fine for this.

I think that there may be alot of apps available, it just may take time
to find them.
