Yes, the same here. It seems that most of the charter members of
OCLUG no longer show up at the meetings. I've had personal and e-mail
discussions with almost all of them and the reasons all seem to have
a certain common thread. Since these converstations were private I
won't detail them here. For a long time I have been watching the
charter process happen at OCLUG as well. While anyone can quibble
over the niceties, overall I have been impressed. A small group of us
tried it a year ago and it went really nowhere, for various reasons.
However, some of the lessons learned at that effort seems to have
been brought over to the new one, which has improved it.

I admit that when I returned to the mailing list in November or so
while still out in exile in Renfrew I was alarmed at what was
happening. However, as I watched the process unfold, and giving
suitable guidence where required, I think it turned out not too bad
for a first kick at the can. It will start us off, and I think on the
right track. If we get the right board and especially the right
executive.

I have been reticent to put my name forward in this new effort for a
number of reasons, some personal some not. I want to see OCLUG
succeed. However, one of the major problems has always been getting
people to help the group out. Giving presentations has always been a
huge pain. I was one of the more visible of the core group of members
keeping the meetings going. For the first year, I was virtually the
only person giving presentations month after month. We as a group
made Linux visible and as a result merited an article in the Ottawa
Citizen, featuring our founder Dave Neil and where I received a
passing mention, being described (I believe) as being an energetic,
dynamic and magnetic personality <smugness ensues>

In any case, while I want OCLUG to succeed, I don't want to see fall
back into only the few dragging along the rest. I've done my bit and
have been front and centre from the start. Which brings us to Chris's
next point:

It is very important that everyone get involved. There are nine
positions on the board and from that board they will elect their
executive. (The Charter doesn't describe how this election will take
place, but I rather like the idea secret ballots in conclave and the
burning of ballots with wet or dry straw). I would like to encourage
all of you who have the time and are able to commit to run for
election.

Myself, I haven't decided if I want to be on the board. As I've said,
I've done my bit. However, I have plenty yet to offer OCLUG, so don't
be surprised if I accept a nomination from any list member who would
care to nominate me.
