After booting the newly-installed kernel 2.2.18, the hard disk active light
remained illuminated continuously.  Extracts from the message log before and
after the install are separated by the dashed line: =>

When I boot from a rescue disk, the disk activity light extinguishes as
usual, so I assume there is no hardware problem.

Ideas?
