[oclug] Finding printer in Linux

Following the manufacturer's recommendation I leave my inkjet printer 
turned off until I want to print something.  This isn't a problem under 
DOS, Win31 or Win9X.  Linux, however, refuses to recognize that a 
printer is attached (it's sharing a port with a Syquest EZ135 drive) 
and I find that I have to turn on and reboot in order to print under 
Linux.

Is there some way of having Linux recognize my printer without 
rebooting?
