Was there this much free when you were getting the log entries and
harddisk activity?

It sounds like your kernel has run out of RAM and swap and is trying not
to kill processes in order to survive. I don't know why it would do
this if it hadn't used up all RAM and swap.
The VM management of Linux 2.4.0 is greatly improved. If it's practical
for you to upgrade to 2.4.x, do so.
