[oclug] Mail Woes

Hey,

I walked into the office of my ISP and they where all hanging their
heads. It turns out that for the last two weeks someone has been
sending out huge amounts of email bringing the server to a crawl. They
told me that presently the server was jammed up with over 24000 messages
being sent out. I asked them if they where going out or coming in.
They did not know. These guys are definitely not Admins. They are what
I would call station watchers. They receive the tech info from an
outfit in Ottawa. I suggested to them that there was some way of
tracking who sent the messages. The Ottawa tech claimed no. Therefore,
I guess I would pose a few questions:

Is it possible to first off track who is sending a large amount of
messages?

Is it possible to selectively purge out certain messages?

Is it possible to set up mail rules for users like : max of 200
outgoing messages at any given time per user?

The last one I could see as a way to prevent mass mailing issues. The
24000 message overloading problem may be caused by someone that started
up a mass mailing business or something. Who knows.

I do know everyone has really been bitching lately about performance of
the ISP connections.

Charles,
