Well. That's the problem. It's not during in-activity. It's during
activity. :)
I allready have something in my cron which runs quarterly to maintain
the connection. ( Pings the gateway )

It seems when the I am doing heavy traffic loads through UDP streams.
( VNC , Games ) that the modem will just die.

Music seems to be okay ( streaming ) but when I try to do any form of
high loads across the modem it will just cack out.
Now, the only thing which I am nervous about is for quite some time I
have left UDP ports 2000-65535 open for anyone through my firewall,
in / out.
It's allways been like this since I wrote up the chains.
Could this of been the problem / Should this be a concern?
My logic is that UDP is only good for streaming and most of the ports
are assigned dynamically through TCP handshakes.

Rogers has replaced the modem twice allready and shortly after
jumping online and getting a VNC connection open to the outside world
kills the connection.
Unplugging the Modem and plugging it back in resolves the problem.

I was thinking of forgoing with playing with RH6.2 any longer and
jumping up to Mandrake 7.2.

Security issue? Modem Issue? Kernel Issue?

One other tidbit, the problems seem of started when I installed a
module for the kernel which handles DXPlay communications.
In doing a lsmod I only see the following:

Module Size Used by
ip_masq_portfw 2596 5 (autoclean)
ip_masq_quake 1384 0
ip_masq_irc 1624 0
ip_masq_cuseeme 1176 0 (unused)
ip_masq_raudio 3032 0
ip_masq_ftp 4248 0
lockd 31592 1 (autoclean)
sunrpc 53540 1 (autoclean) [lockd]
ne2k-pci 4716 1 (autoclean)
8390 6136 0 (autoclean) [ne2k-pci]
rtl8139 12388 1 (autoclean)

The module handles UDP packets and port forwarding to allow DX Games
to work across a masqurade.

Any help would be apprecated.

I ran into a similar problem with the terayon modem where to modem
would stop sending and receiving after random periods of inactivity.

I added
ping -i 300 yahoo.com &

at the end of my rc.local
It has resolved the issue.
give this a try but don't forget the &
