I would recommend investigating SSH as a more secure alternative to telnet
(telnet tends to make me shudder :)  OpenSSH is a good free SSH implementation
worth looking at.  SSH takes a bit of time to set up properly, but it is not
that difficult and offers much better security (which seems to be a priority
for you a the moment :)
