[oclug] Linux on the desktop??

Again, I'd have to recommend Mandrake 7.2. It is a very stable distro and
very friendly to use. It also comes with both lilo and grub, take your pick
(grub is installed per default, and is more "user friendly" in the scene
that it gives the user a menu rather than a prompt at boot up). It comes
prepacked with all sorts of software, and it is very easy to install
software (Mandrake is RH based, there for rpm's work great, or if you wish
you could compile the source...its all up to you).
Let me put it this way. I had Mandrake installed on my main machine at one
time (I'm currently using slack 7.2 again... my fav), my fiance was able to
learn how to get on and do everything she wanted to. She is not what you
would call computer savvy. In other words, if she can use I, anyone can :)
fairly easily that is
Good luck with your project

Thanks everyone for the input. I think I better explain my problem a little
more in depth. the company I work for is in software development so I need a
distro that will keep the developers happy as well as ease of use for the
novice. I also, for my sanity need a configurable install mainly for the
lilo end of things, I'm setting up a double boot environment.
Thanks

Well, for me, X didn't work. Also, the compiler is broken and won't
even compile the kernel -- you need to use "kgcc" (= an older version of
gcc) for that.
Also, the C library shipped with RH7 is a beta version. All in all, RH7
seemed not quite ready for prime-time to me. In general, I find the Red
Hat *.0 releases awful, the *.1 releases so-so, and the *.2 releases OK.
Of course, I'm the cautious type, and probably won't use a 2.4 kernel
until the middle of 2001. :-)
