If you suspect video driver problems, try vga=normal .

I can't really make any guesses what the problem is.

Try a different distribution.  One with a boring, text only install
might work better.  I think Red Hat has one.  So do Debian and
Slackware, of course.

Could be just finicky hardware is locking up the kernel before much
happens.
