[oclug] Curios tar problem

I recently tar'ed about 7GB onto a tape.  After the tar was finished i
did a tar tvf /dev/tape and it showed all the files that hade been
backed up.

The strange thing is that when I try to extract from the device nothing
happens.  Not exactly nothing.  Here is the command I gave   tar xvf
/dev/tape /temp   and it just sits there for about 5 minutes before just
stopping and no files have been extracted.  When I ran the command again
I also had a ps running and it showed me my tar process.

What I can't figure out is why can I get a listing of the files on the
tape but can't seem to be able to extract them.

This is a real puzzler to me.
