You can probably do it via environment variables.  Look at LANG,
LANGUAGE and LOCALE.  I'm not quite sure which does what, I'm afraid :(

You'll probably find that many apps are woefully lacking in
internationalisation support... be sure to send translations to the
maintainers if you can :)
