Does self advertisement count as recognition? It's one thing when
some completely outside person discovers a product and uses it (like
a satisfied customer for instance -- we like this product because)
and something else when the company itself explains their rational or
even a columnist who is paid by someone to do reviews of products
(even recruited by the company occasionally).
Of course either is perfectly valid. But one is recognition and the
other is hype.
One interesting quote that will get the purists all in a huff is the
sentence "(the product is) a great example of a large project using
Perl both as a system administration scripting tool and a Serious
Programming Language." As everyone knows, Perl not a "Serious
Programming Language" nor is it even a "Good Programmging Language."
As I've said before (over several years) Perl started out as a fairly
good tool and through the process of bloat became, well, rather ugly.
What would be more interesting concerning the manager and gateway
product would be an analysis of the overall implementation of the
product, which while not unique, is very much in tune with Unix
philosophy. He's gathered the tools he wants to use and written a
fairly efficient front end for it to make them all work together
seemlessly. This is "Serious Unix Programming" and very well done by
e-smith. The Perl article touches very briefly on it, but a more
overall view might be something that perhaps a Dr. Dobbs Journal or
the SysAdmin Journal might be interested in. This would be real
recognition.
