This assumes you are building the kernel in /usr/src/linux/. You can
put it wherever you like, actually.

you need /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage, and that will become
vmlinuz

You need /usr/src/linux/System.map, and that will become the System.map

>What about the modules?

You need /usr/src/linux/modules/*.o, and those are your modules.
Although they are normally installed with a hierarchy that's all
organised, (if I recall correctly) it isn't actually needed. You can
copy all those *.o files to laptop:/lib/modules/2.4.1/

Hmm...*waits for linuxdoc*...*waits*...hmm, I wonder if Voltayre's
Encyclopedia Xenobiologica really is coming out on CD and if it will be
too expensive. Ah, there is the
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html that may answer other
kernel questions.

Ask more questions if you have them. :)
