I have been runnig KDE2.1beta2 for the last few days...disappointed to
say the least. The one feature i wanted to see is not implemented
anywhere i can find, namely getting the damn task bar out of the main
tool bar..hate that in gnome and I hate it in KDE2. Also what happened
to the left hide button on the app bar? now if you want to hide the bar
you ned to go to the far right and then again if you need to click K
then all the wayleft for the menu..dumb.
Audio on my installation is definately broken, it starts to distort and
sound like crap very quickly. The new audio player is so incomplete i do
not understand why they changed it. the suite of new apps are very
powerful looking but the designeres obviously never took GUI Design 101
in school..all the new KDE apps are busy beyond belief and frankly its
turning me off..was also the complaint i had with gnome.
Konquerer is so slow its boggles the mind, as is the file manager
aspect. The true strength of KDE1 was file managment, it worked and it
made sense. The new file manager is busy, bloated and works horribly.
They have totaly lost intuitivty with this file manager and frankly it
is also a turn off. To be honest, with KDE2 the only real improvement
over KDE1 is its widget set.. its pretty. In all other aspects it comes
up way short. Worse yet, set the icons for small in a ordered
list..select a file in th middle then try to sellect a file further
along while holding shift (select all) and it only grbs files on the
same plane???? Dumb
Where is the promised theme manager, oh you can import KDE 1 themes but
still no theme manager for KE2. Also why does it not apply fonts and
colors to KDE1? This would seem logical but no..you have to use KDE1
control panel to try to emulate the colors on the desktop.
Finally, use the file manage and netscape and suddenly your memory usage
shoots through the roof, use the file manager for web browsing and you
get memeory leaks from hell. While nothing in the world would ever get
me to use Gnome *Shudder* im very dissapointed with KDE2, in fact if I
could just get the pretty widgets to work in KDE1, thats where i would
stay.
