Thanks Greg
System info says
release = 2.2.17-21mdk
version = Linux Mandrake release 7.2 (odyssey) for i586
I looked in inet.d there is no sign of httpd and the only things not
commented were ftp telnet and pop3, which I have now commented out. When I
try to install Apache (rpm -i apache-1.3.14-2mdk.i586.rpm) I get a message
saying it's already there. I did find httpd in /usr/sbin but when I start it
I get "syntax error on line 168 of etc/httpd/config/httpd.conf: invalid
command default.htm perhaps misspelled or not defined by a module not
included in the server configuration". I have shown my paths and my
httpd.conf below in case you or someone has the time to have a look
Thanks for tksysv tip, it will be very useful.
regards
Barry

## httpd.conf -- Apache HTTP server configuration file
##
# ----------------------------------------------------------------------
# NOTE: when you install *both* apache and apache-mod-perl, the mod_perl
# *automatically* runs proxied. Have a look at the file
# httpd-perl-proxied.conf
# ----------------------------------------------------------------------
# This is the main server configuration file. See URL http://www.apache.org/
# for instructions.
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do, if you are unsure consult the online docs. You have been
# warned.
# Originally by Rob McCool
#
# With all new apache versions, use of access.conf and srm.conf are
# deprecated. We only use httpd.conf.
#
# These 2 directives are needed by some modules, for example FrontPage
ResourceConfig /dev/null
AccessConfig /dev/null
#---------------- Dynamic Shared Object (DSO) Support ---------------------
#
# To be able to use the functionality of a module which was built as a DSO
you
# have to place corresponding `LoadModule' lines at this location so the
# directives contained in it are actually available _before_ they are used.
# Please read the file README.DSO in the Apache 1.3 distribution for more
# details about the DSO mechanism and run `httpd -l' for the list of already
# built-in (statically linked and thus always available) modules in your
httpd
# binary.
#
# Example:
# LoadModule foo_module libexec/mod_foo.so
#
# Documentation for modules is in "/var/www/manual/mod" in HTML format.
#LoadModule mmap_static_module modules/mod_mmap_static.so
LoadModule env_module modules/mod_env.so
### The first module activates buffered logs. It will write to the
### access_log __only__ when its 4K buffer is full. Gives maximum
### performance, but you have to restart the server to get all your

# The following is for PHP/FI (PHP2):
#AddType application/x-httpd-php .phtml
# AddHandler allows you to map certain file extensions to "handlers",

# Format: AddHandler action-name ext1
# To use CGI scripts:
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi

# Limit on total number of servers running, i.e., limit on the number
# of clients who can simultaneously connect --- if this limit is ever
# reached, clients will be LOCKED OUT, so it should NOT BE SET TOO LOW.
# It is intended mainly as a brake to keep a runaway server from taking
# Unix with it as it spirals down...

# MaxRequestsPerChild: the number of requests each child process is
# allowed to process before the child dies.
# The child will exit so as to avoid problems after prolonged use when
# Apache (and maybe the libraries it uses) leak. On most systems, this
# isn't really needed, but a few (such as Solaris) do have notable leaks
# in the libraries.

# To use this feature, you must uncomment mod_mmap_static in the modules
# section on top of this file, on 2 lines: LoadModule and Addmodule
<IfModule mod_mmap_static.c>
QSC on
</IfModule>
# Also, you can use the buffered logs by uncommenting
# mod_log_config_buffered in the modules section above.
### To use mapped file you have to put a line like this:
# mmapfile /var/www/html/file_to_map_in_memory
#
# You should also tune Child Processes. Please read the documentation on
# your server at: http://localhost/manual/misc/perf-mja.html. This page
# also explains how to avoid accept serialization by turning SingleListen on
# and binding ports or IPs to different CPUs.
#SingleListen On

# Add-on Modules and Virtual Hosts #
####################################
#
# Each time we install an add-on module , the post-install script of the RPM
# adds an "Include" line to read the configuration for that module. When we
# remove the module, we keep the Include line, but we zero out the config
# file so Apache doesn't complain.
#
# mod_perl is an exception, since it's now built in the same SRPM as
# apache. Result: we now support two perl configurations!
# The first one is apache-mod_perl, where mod_perl is compiled statically
# into Apache for best performance and stability.
# The second one setups apache as the server by default and sends perl
# requests via ProxyPass to apache-mod_perl. It increases performance
# since the perl interpreter is only used for perl and the standard apache
# does all the html and image files, with a smaller footprint.
#
# NOTE: Do not remove the following ines or it might break your
configuration.
<IfDefine PERLPROXIED>
ProxyPass /perl/ http://127.0.0.1:8200/
ProxyPassReverse /perl/ http://127.0.0.1:8200/
</IfDefine>
#
# We also put virtual hosts "Includes" in this section. This will be used by
# administration scripts. Instead of parsing all httpd.conf to modify a
# vhost, we just include the config file. Each type of vhosting has its own
# config file.
#
Include conf/vhosts/Vhosts.conf
#
# For DynamicVhosts and VirtualHomePages, uncomment those lines:
#LoadModule vhost_alias_module modules/mod_vhost_alias.so
#AddModule mod_vhost_alias.c
#Include conf/vhosts/DynamicVhosts.conf
#Include conf/vhosts/VirtualHomePages.conf
