I'm adding my support to Python.
It is trivially easy to get started on:
python<enter>print "Hello, world!"<enter>
There is lots of documentation available at http://www.python.org/, and
even more at http://www.oreilly.com/.
Python would be a useful language in today's workplace because the
language is easy to learn straight to the point of writing useful,
constructive, and/or large programs.
That said, you'd be surprised what you can do in a shellscript. :-)
