Have not used ximian's Gnome in a while, but I use debian sid's Gnome
all the time. I love it, and find the component aproach beautiful.
Debian sid has the lastest bleeding edge stuff of gnome 1.4, I could
never downgrade to a more stable gnome. It just would not have all the
libs and apps I enjoy so much.
The GTK/Gnome apps I use the most are dia, gASQL, evolution, gimp,
galeon, nautilus, anjuta, ethereal. Sun still does not feel Gnome is
ready for the masses and I agree, still too much changing. It won't be
until bonobo+gconf are used in more apps will we really see the benefits
of the gnome philosophy. Some time after gnome 2.0 is released it would
be ready for the masses, two years maybe.
It is however ready to be used daily, I do. My Mother and Father use
it, and without Gnome they would be lost in front of linux. KDE/Gnome
are great for people who come from a gui background and don't want to
learn bash. I like Gnome Object Model aproach better then KDE's
aproach.
You don't need all the gnome evironment to enjoy it, but I have enough
CPU to run nautilus/gnome-panel smoothly, and although the applets in
gnome aren't as good as wmaker's, it all works well together, and I like
it.
