Yeah, that's the USR 56k Performance Pro modem.  I've been using it for almost
a year, and since I got it working it's been chuging along pretty well. 
Although for some reason (maybe human error on my part), I can't seem to get it
working with any kernel above 2.4.0, but that's another story.

To correct your assumption, it's an actual hardware modem, not a soft-modem. 
The driver has been included in the kernel since 2.3.x., and Linux should
recognize the modem automagically as long as PnP support is enabled in your
kernel config.
