Damn, now you have me learning a third new command today.  ;-)

Switchto seems o work when I'm already in a text console.  I can can
switch to other text consoles, or the X console (switchto 7), but when I
try to get to another console from X I get:

[vgedris at vgedris vgedris]$ switchto 1
switcho: Failed to select VT 1 (Operation not permitted)

...actually, that works as root.

Interesting stuff.
