I've managed to meet most of those requirements with mutt, ssh,
procmail and fetchmail. If I am away from home, I simply ssh into my
desktop. In the past I've also used a http web mail program called
sqwebmail (I think) that could read a user's Maildir. When I stopped
using it, they were even in the process of adding web based filter
editing, which was pretty neat. It could be used through SSL, so was
fairly secure. I've never used twig, so I can't comment on its
features.
Your idea of using IMAP is pretty good, however, there has been a
history of fairly serious security problems in many IMAP daemons.
That's my CAN$0.02
