Hmm, Francis.  I think that many "Rex et Imperator" were self-appointed
ruffians who, (along with attendant military baggage) re-wrote violent
histories to reflect their prior peaceful, divine appointment and subsequent
linear familial ascention to the throne.  For a modern example, look at Juan
Maria Samiranch of the once-every-four-years "International Advertising,
Exploitation and Annoying American Hype Professional Sporting Fiascos"
(otherwise known as the Olympics).
