I am attempting to install Linux, RedHat V 7.1 on an Alpha system, more specifically a Multia.
I get a nasty bunch of soft and hard read errors when booting the JumpStart CD-ROM, I have made two different copies of this now on two different burners and on two different media, and I have swapped around with 4 different SCSI CD-ROM drives. I have settled on using a RRD43 CD-ROM as it produces the minimal number of errors and I can boot the JumpStart and DISC 1 of the RedHat distribution.
I can successfully partition the disk I want now with JumpStart.
So, I boot Disc 1, boot dka300 -fl 0, and I get some soft errors, and go through the various dialogs and eventually get to a point where a message is placed that says, Starting the X Server now. The screen goes blank for a while and then the text all comes back and no matter how long I wait, nothing happens.
So, I boot Disc 1, boot dka300 -fl text, and wind up in aboot, so I choose option 3 which is a text boot. Eventually, a whole bunch of dialogs appear, I respond to all the questions and finally end up at the screen for entering the root password, to which I do. I hit enter and that's it, nothing happens.
Would anyone with experience on Linux with Alpha care to comment?
Regards, Richard
