[oclug] X on a Laptop

I have a Compaq Contura 410CX and recently installed X 3.3.5, and it
refuses to work.

Now that I've been entirely unhelpful... :)

xf86config worked fine, and I found what chipset I had from
www.linux-laptop.net. X seems to boot just fine, but dies complaining
that "No valid modes found." I scroll up, and lo, the ONE mode that I
_want_ isn't even displaying as "Deleted."

All I want/need is the 640x480 @ 60Hz with 31.5kHz hsync. It's in
XF86Config, but doesn't even seem to detect as invalid. (I'm led to
believe this is the correct setting from another similar Compaq laptop
listing at the aforementioned website)

Anyone else have fun setting X up on a laptop?

(And no, I'm not looking for snide remarks about my memory size; I intend
to use X so I don't have to switch VTYs all the time, no more)

Thanks!
