Who's western society. Are you talking about U.S. western, or British
western? German western or Austrian western? Perhaps French western.

Each of these have various degrees of appreciation for automobiles.
In Europe, the majority of people use public transportation to get to
and from work which is rail. Yes they still have road congestion
problems, but considering that most of the cities in Europe are
hundreds of years old with streets relatively narrow compared to our
North American (and trying to accomodate the cars at the name time)
versions it's only natural.

Having had the opportunity to drive around in world class cities all
over the world (and Toronto's self-designation as a world class city
is laughable), I can tell you that the streets get clogged up with a
relatively small number of cars. Have you ever driven around London?
Frankfurt? There's a reason why both London and Frankfurt have these
"Ring Roads" around them (and thank God for them, despite the their
problems).
