    I think many do it in the name of software reuse. In your particular case,
the best thing to do is build from source without LDAP support. Whomever
packaged it was probably trying to help with LDAP support in the mail server,
but perhaps they should have made one with and without LDAP support instead.

    Every package has a maintainer. You can contact him to find out his
reasoning.

    Oh, and your absolutely right about the dependencies:

[msoulier at tigger msoulier]$ apt-cache show exim | grep Depends

    I guess I just didn't notice as it's totally automagickal.
