I had been having weird problems lately and I wonder if anyone else
has had similar problems.
I'd been running rh 7.1 and it was running quite fine before I decided to
run 2.4.3. Once I did that, after about a day, my GNOME desktop got
into a funny state. Terminals wouldn't open, emacs would segfault,
etc. I tried various things to diagnose the problem, but since I was in
the middle of exams and didn't have the time to mess around, I just
rebooted and everything went along fine...
Until 48 hours later, when similar odd things started happening
again. Xchat started hiccuping, gnome-terminals would just disappear,
etc... So I tried logging out and found that either X or gnome/wm
hung. So I three-keyed it back to the console. Once, the console
appeared I was greeted with a huge mess of "stuff" with the words
kernel-error or something to that effect and things went from bad to
I was in a really ugly state, and again wanting to get back to my
studying, I rebooted. Well this time Linux would not come back
up. Early during the init process, it complained that
the /var partition was not available.
I tried *many* different things to resurrect my linux box, but had a
hard time getting around this. I ended up having to reinstall linux.
So now things are back to normal, and I'm running the stock kernel in
Has anyone had similar problems with either, redhat7.1, linux 2.4.3,
or a combination of the two? I *would* file a bug report if I had
*any* clue what went wrong. :(
I got little sleep last night because of this and would like to make
sure I avoid such problems in the future.
